What are European CO2 quotas (EUA)?
As a part of the Kyoto Protocol, the EU is liable to reduce its CO2 emission in the period 2008-2012 by 8 % in relation to the level in 1990. Furthermore, the EU has determined a further reduction of 20 % until 2020.
One of the initiatives taken by the EU to reach the target is the CO2 quota system (EUA), to which all larger and highly energy consuming enterprises are subject. One CO2 quota entitles the enterprise to emit 1 tonne of CO2. EU controls how many quotas are issued in total in the EU.
It is possible for the enterprises to trade in the CO2 quotas within the EU. This means that if an enterprise cannot reduce its CO2 emission sufficiently on its own, it must pay others to do so. For enterprises having reached the targets of CO2 reduction, the system ensures that it may still be beneficial to reduce even further. The reason is that if an enterprise has excess quotas as a result of achieved reductions in the CO2 emission, they may be sold.
What does it mean to cancel CO2 quotas?
When CO2 neutral website purchases CO2 quotas and subsequently has them cancelled at state authorities in EU, there are fewer quotas available for the enterprises subject to the legislation. This means that these enterprises are forced to reduce their emission of CO2 to meet the requirements.
Thereby, we ensure that the total CO2 emission drops correspondingly.
